Swedish shrimp fisheries MSC certified

Swedish shrimp fishery has been independently certified to the MSC environmental standard for sustainable fishing as the first in Skagerrak, Kattegat and the Norwegian Deep.

Swedish consumers will shortly find sustainably sourced shrimps in stores as the fisheries operating at the Swedish west coast and outside the Norwegian coast recently obtained MSC certification following a 20 month long assessment period. Information about the stock, sourcing and environmental aspects has been thoroughly reviewed by DNV GL and has been found compliant with the requirements of MSC’s standard for sustainable fishing.

“We are pleased to announce MSC-certified shrimps. Our customers are becoming increasingly concerned about marine life and the environment and it is important for us to show that our shrimps are sourced sustainably,” says Henrik Johansson from the Swedish Fish auction, which is coordinating the certification process.

The work is not completed with the certificate, however. Fisheries that are MSC certified get additional requirements that they must complete within a certain timeframe. As a consequence, the MSC standard ensures continuous improvements.
